Twitter has developed a special version of its website that can be accessed by Russians even though the regular version of Twitter is blocked there due to the situation in Ukraine. This new version is available on the dark web, which means it’s more private and can be reached using a special “onion” URL with the Tor browser in Russia and Ukraine.
The news about this was shared by Alec Muffett, a software engineer at Twitter who is also an expert in internet security. Alec has experience in setting up similar onion sites for other companies.
“This is possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.
“On behalf of @Twitter, I am delighted to announce their new @TorProject onion service,” said Alec.
Facebook and other social media platforms, along with the BBC, have versions that can be accessed through Tor.
Recently, Russian officials announced the blocking of access to Facebook due to the platform imposing restrictions on state-owned Russian media. Twitter, BBC, Voice of America (funded by the US government), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, and Latvia-based website Meduza were also blocked.
